Build it right, not twice.

We work with organisations, founders and teams to pressure-test big ideas early, before you burn the budget for zero return.

We see it all the time: no discovery, no data, no analysis. Just money down the drain. Skipping discovery doesn't make you move faster, it's why you end up rebuilding the same thing over and over.

The problem

Most builds don't have enough evidence behind them.

Most product or project builds don't use enough data or research to justify the budget. There's no clear way to measure whether it's working, and no real check that people want it before it gets built.

When people don't use it, it gets redesigned, reworked and rebuilt, again.

You're missing product discovery.

Services

We're multi talented.

01

About to commit budget to a big bet?

Product Discovery

Structured discovery that gets the problem, the market and the constraints on the table before anyone commits to a build. Fast, evidence-led, and built to tell you what's worth doing, not just what's exciting.

02

Between product leaders, or not ready to hire one yet?

Fractional Product Leadership

Senior product leadership, on tap, for organisations that need the judgement without the full-time hire. We step in as your interim or part-time Head of Product: setting direction, running the roadmap, coaching the team underneath it.

03

Tired of reinventing process every sprint?

Product Coaching & Training

One-to-one coaching for product managers finding their feet, and workshop-based training for teams that need a shared way of working. Built from real delivery experience, not a framework off the shelf.

04

Standing up product as a function for the first time?

Building the Product Discipline

Some organisations don't have a product function so much as a collection of people doing product-shaped work. We help design the operating model, the ways of working and the hiring bar so product becomes a discipline, not an accident.

How it runs

Explore. Test. Impact.

Explore

Understand the problem, the users, and what's actually important, through real research, not assumptions.

Test

Build small, testable versions of the idea to check what we believe against the real world, before committing further.

Impact

Measure what happened: the adoption, the outcome, whether it actually worked, and use that to shape what's next.

What clients say

Steph has been instrumental in transforming our understanding of product, educating us on every part of the process and the value it can deliver. FourJaw, and the company with it, is in a significantly better place today than when she joined. A massive thanks for the journey she's taken us on.

About

Because too much gets built that nobody wants.

I started Behind the Build because too many companies spend real money building things people never wanted.

Over the years, I've watched teams pour months of work and massive budgets down the drain. They sweat to deliver projects to tight deadlines, only for them to quietly fail once they reach real users, or worse, they just never launch at all. Not because the team wasn't capable, the designs weren't brilliant, or the technology couldn't cut it. But because nobody actually checked the data and asked: should we build this?

Usually, when a business is so sure they don't need discovery because they've got a great idea or concept, they're often who need it the most.

Ultimately, I believe people deserve products and services that actually meet their needs. That's what product discovery is for, and it's why Behind the Build exists.
